Sell MySQL, Co-Founder to Oracle

Bangalore: MySQL Co-Founder Michael "Monty" Widenius has expressed his concern over the proposed Oracle-Sun merger and has suggested Oracle to sell MySQL to settle the merger. In a statement posted on his blog on Monday, Widenius said the European Commission is "absolutely right to be concerned" about the $7.4 billion takeover of Sun by Oracle, and he urged Oracle to sell MySQL to clear up any antitrust issues, according to CNET.

In his blog, Widenius asked Oracle "to be constructive and commit to sell MySQL to a suitable third party, enabling an instant solution instead of letting Sun suffer much longer." The famed MySQL developer, who departed Sun earlier this year, said that he wishes Sun "all the best, but MySQL needs a different home than Oracle, a home where there will be no conflicts of interest concerning how, or if, MySQL should be developed further."

"Letting Oracle have MySQL is worse than putting the fox in charge of the henhouse, because the hens are no threat to the fox, while MySQL makes Oracle lose customers and forces it to grant discounts to customers threatening to defect. Every day that passes without Oracle excluding MySQL from the deal is further evidence that Oracle just wants to get rid of its open-source challenger, and that the EU's investigation is needed to safeguard innovation and customer choice. This is highly critical because the entire knowledge-based economy is built on databases," said Florian Mueller, an EU policy expert who is a former MySQL shareholder and adviser.

The deal had received approval from U.S. Department of Justice in August but the European Commission opened a probe in early September, citing fear that Oracle's ownership of MySQL could pose a competitive threat. Every day that passes without Oracle excluding MySQL from the deal is further evidence that Oracle just wants to get rid of its open-source challenger, and that the EU's investigation is needed to safeguard innovation and customer choice.

Richard Stallman, founder of the free-software movement, wrote an open letter to the EU on Monday opposing an Oracle-owned MySQL as a threat that would hinder its further development in the open-source community.

Meanwhile Sun continues to suffer. Few days back the company announced that it would lay off another 3,000 employees, about 10 percent of its total workforce, over the next year. This latest round is in addition to 6,000 jobs cuts announced almost a year ago as part of the company's restructuring plan.

Mahindra Satyam may lay off 5000 benchers

Chennai: Months after assuring that there would be no further lay offs, Mahindra Satyam may just lay off another 5000 benchers. Many employees on the Virtual Pool Program (VPP) of the company have been sent a formal notice of two months by e-mail.

According to the Times of India, the mail dated October 19, reads: "In our earlier communication dated June 11, 2009, you were placed on VPP for a period of six months and accordingly, your Virtual Pool Leave is due to end on December 18, 2009. It is rather unfortunate that due to the continued economic constraints and business outlook, we do not anticipate that we will have the ability to recall many of our valued associates within the VPP period."

On June 11, the company had announced the creation of the virtual pool, placing around 8,000 associates on the bench. "The surplus employees will be put in the VPP and paid basic salary, PF and medical insurance," Vineet Nayyar, CEO, Tech Mahindra, had said while ruling out any retrenchment.

However, with the six-month period of the VPP set to lapse in December, the company has served a two-month notice, as required by the employment contract, reportedly on over 5,000 employees. Sources said that the company did not have enough projects on hand and was not able to recall many associates.

A Mahindra Satyam spokesperson said that the company had absorbed about 1,500 associates from the virtual pool. The spokesperson also denied that the company was "laying off" people, even as the mail speaks of "separation of employment".

"We have given these employees an option of availing outplacement services. We will try to help them to the best of our abilities," he said.

Now, a search engine for fun activities

Bangalore: A new search engine Goby.com has come up, which allows users to search for activity and help them find things to do in the city. Goby uses three boxes - What, Where and When - with drop-down menus to find results for your query. It crawls the Web searching from 500 sources and employs a part-human, part-machine review process to ensure first-rate results. Goby searches through over 200 categories, including live music, art exhibits, outdoor festivals, spas, bed-and-breakfasts and restaurants, according to Wall Street Journal.

Though Goby's query boxes ask users to enter What, Where and When, the When is always an optional specification. The What box opens five categories: things to do, food and drink, events, places to stay and, fall fun. Many of these open several more-specified subcategories. The Where box opens up a Map of the U.S to help users to search for location much more effectively.

Lists of query results are deliberately designed to show more than just Web links, like what Google often displays. Suggested activities are displayed in a numbered list on the left side of the screen, and a map with corresponding numbers is displayed on the right, moving along with your cursor as you scroll on the page. A blue flashlight tool on the map can be dragged anywhere to pinpoint exactly where you want to find activities. It also has a 'f Share on Facebook' option on all its search results.

Goby.com has been available to the public for only a few weeks and it is still working out some kinks. Goby still has many errors on its search result and sometimes the same results are listed four times in a row. Photos representing these activities are pulled in from source sites like bedandbreakfast.com as well as from Google and Flickr. While these images can help user save time, some of the results were not accurate. Also, the search engine currently only pulls out results from the U.S.

Goby does not let users build an itinerary. So if a user finds couple of interesting things or events on Goby, they cannot save it. The company says it plans to incorporate these features in the near future. It would be incredibly helpful if Goby had a mobile app. Goby says it is working on an iPhone app, which it expects to release later this year.

Goby just needs to be more accurate and expand to other country searches as well to completely become a fun activity search engine

Beggar can be Choosers

A man walks past a beggar every day and gives him Rs. 10 and that Continues for a year. Then suddenly the daily donation changes to Rs. 7, 50.

" Well," the beggar thinks, " it's still better than nothing."

A year passes in this way until the man's daily donation suddenly becomes Rs. 5.

" What's going on now?" the beggar asks his donor. " First you give me Rs. 10 every day, then Rs. 7,50 and now only Rs. 5. What's the problem?"

" Well," the man says, " last year my eldest son went to university. It's very expensive, so I had to cut costs. This year my eldest daughter also went to university, so I had to cut my expenses even further ."

" And how many children do you have?" the beggar asks.

" Four," the man replies.

" Well," says the beggar, " I hope you don't plan to educate them all at my expense".

Dippawali-dipo ka tayohar

Every year we eagerly wait for this special day, according to Hindu religion, called Diwali i.e. festival of lights. No matter where you live, but I'm sure all Indians feel a different vibe on Diwali. After living in States for about 10 years, we have developed our own way of celebration and keeping the tradition alive.
Our Diwali starts on the first day of Diwali, Dhanteras, by cleaning up the whole house and prepare or buy sweets from Indian stores. In the evening the true essence of Diwali comes with lighting the Diyas and decorating the home with them. Buying some Gold/Silver on this auspicious day of the year is a custom.
Diwali bring joy and happiness in our lives. It rejuvenates our enthusiasm to live and look forward to it. By telling the stories behind Diwali celebration to our kids is the tradition we started and will be done each year.

The whole family's involvement is the key to this festival. That's what we have seen since our childhood. On Diwali night we perform Laxmi poojan wearing new clothes and gathering all possible Poojan samagree (puja items). Indian sweets and mouthwatering snacks are main attractions of Diwali. After Laxmi poojan at our places , we have a tradition from many years to gather at any of our friends' place for Dinner or playing with firecrackers. The Dinner is usually Potluck to try delicious recipes of everyone participating.

The Dinner is followed by the fun tradition, playing cards or any other game as a group. This is one festival that we all celebrate the very same day, the Diwali is, regardless of weeknight/weekend night.
We all hope to enjoy Diwali every year together keeping all the traditions alive.
Happy Diwali.

Satyam and HCL on hiring mode

Bangalore: After being acquired by Tech Mahindra six months ago, Satyam Computer Services (now Mahindra Satyam) will hire 130 people for different positions. This hiring is likely to be done form outside the company. Also, the IT giant HCL has planned to hire 100 professionals for its polish operations.

"We will hire 110 IT professionals to increase our strength from 140 to 250 in our Polish operations in the next one-year. We plan to expand our operations in Poland as the market there is developing rapidly," said Siddhartha S, General Manager (Global Delivery Centers), HCL.

For Satyam, Hari Thalapalli, Chief People and Marketing Officer, Mahindra Satyam said, "We got an approval for external hiring on October 4. These are speciality skills, which are not there in the virtual pool and are not trainable internally. These junior- and middle-level hirings will largely be from India. Besides, we will be hiring one or two senior level people from the market for select areas."

Mahindra Satyam lost 200-250 client companies after the confession by Ramalinga Raju that he had cooked the company's books for several years. Today, the company has 400 customers globally. "We have so far won 30 new logos, most of them single-digit million dollar contracts, and 15 new orders in Oracle implementation in 15 weeks. There is a complete strategy that has been laid out to regain lost contracts and we are working towards it," Thalapalli said.

On the cultural front and people-related issues, Thalapalli said that the company recently launched employee connect programmes, including one in which the Chief Executive Officer, C P Gurnani, walks across different floors and talks to people and listens to their issues.

"We recently did something called 'Shadow Board', typically for associates (staffers) who have 2-6 years of work experience. We have selected 8-10 people who act as board members, who will identify problems and bring forth unconventional ways of resolving the problems - including how to procure new business and rebuild brand. Clearly, now there is a greater amount of connect between the leadership and associates than earlier," said Thalapalli.

Google Squared Gets Better, But It Still Can’t Find Mars

October 9, 2009
A few months ago, Google launched an experimental new search project, called Google Squared, that literally tries to take all the messy, unstructured information on the Web and put it into neat little, labeled boxes.
It is still very much in Labs, but today it got better. Google Squared can now deal with four times as many squares of data, 120 up from 30. Columns can now be sorted, and results can be exported into Google Spreadsheets were the data can be manipulated, charted, and so forth. In other words, it is turning random facts found on the Web into data that can be played with and computed.
While Google Squared is much better, it is nowhere near ready for mass consumption. If you do a search for “planets,” for instance (see screenshot), it fails to identify Mars in its grid. The first result is Pluto, which officially is no longer a planet. While I too am still resisting the deplanetization of Pluto because of my emotional attachment to it, Google as a cold-hearted, just-the-facts-ma’am search engine doesn’t have the same excuse. And it is not just Pluto, it also lists Ceres (another planet also-ran), Jupiter’s moon Io, and the Asteroid Belt (which most definitely is not a planet). Mars definitely needs to go in there before the Asteroid Belt.
Is this the best Google can do against Wolfram Alpha and other newfangled search engines which also take advantage of structured data to present a deep set of facts for every query? Search for “planets” on Wolfram and it correctly identifies all eight (minus Pluto) including Mars.

End of the line for NVIDIA chipsets, and that's official

GPU giant NVIDIA has confirmed that the company is putting the brakes on the Nforce chipset line because of legal wranglings with Intel.
According to an spokesman, NVIDIA will “postpone further chipset investments”.
Intel claims that its four-year-old chipset license with NVIDIA doesn’t cover the Nehalem or Core series of CPUs. NVIDIA naturally disagrees with this and as a result is that both parties will fight it out in court sometime in 2010. What’s interesting is that NVIDIA has also halted development on chipsets for AMD processors too. NVIDIA claims that “there is no demand for our chipsets in the AMD platform.” So this could very well be the end of the line for the NVIDIA chipset.
This is an interesting shift for NVIDIA. This, combined with the Fermi announcement (which is basically aimed at the scientific market, and not gamers) seems to indicate that things are changing at NVIDIA. While NVIDIA is claiming that the story on the SemiAccurate that the company is shelving the GTX 260, GTX 275, and GTX 285 and possibly the GTX 295 is “patently untrue,” there can be little doubt that things are changing at NVIDIA.

A Day without Google: sorry, no thanks

How important is Google and all the applications surrounding the major search engine for you? Could you live one day without it and just relying on alternative search engines?

It all started with the post on AltSearchEngines:

We at AltSearchEngines are actually asking everyone to go one day (6 am - midnight), Tuesday, June 12th, without using one of the major search engines; Google, Yahoo!, MSN, AOL, or Ask.

This post lead me to a little thinking about how important Google or any of the other major search engines really are. Ok, admittedly there are hundreds of alternative search engines out there that could do the same job. The big question is could they?

Google is part of my browser. It’s my homepage, it’s my feeds reader, it’s my blog search engine, it’s one of my main advertisement processes (both AdSense and AdWords), it’s such an ubiquitous pack of tools that going by a work day (don’t count holidays or any of those days that I simply cannot see a computer in front of me) without using it is almost unthinkable. Actually, using google is already a process done without thinking: need some found on the internet? Google it…

I’m very much in favor of “A Day Without…” days. You can find how unimportant some things are in your life if you try, but a day without google?!?

Using the alternative search engines can get you to discover some tools that might in fact help your days, but the success:desperation ratio is just too small for me.

Here are my 5 top reasons why a day without google is not for me:

  1. The pack effect. Google has many tools that I use together in one place and interacting with each other. Finding alternatives is probably possible (haven’t tried) but would just mean another bunch of bookmarks and logins that I’m not looking for.
  2. Google works. It’s the top search engine for a reason. It works and works well. To write this post I’ve done a little test using 10 “random” search strings on Google and the other 4 major search engines (Yahoo!, MSN, Ask.com and AOL) and repeating them in 5 of the alternative search engines out there (sorry, not going to name them). What I concluded? The top 5 are the top 5 for a reason. Not one of the alternatives gave me better or more relevant results than the top 5 for any of the tested searches.
  3. The “looks”. One thing that was immensely attractive to me on Google since the beginning was how stripped the page looks. Search engines with a home page already full of ads or one thousand suggestions to click without me even having typed anything in the search box are hugely counterproductive. Unless I tell it to, I don’t want to know the latest gossips of media people or how nice and sunny it is on the Maldives and look, a nice trip there for half the price…
  4. Interactivity and Customization. If I want to have the page full of information, I want it to be information that is relevant to me, information that I chose to be shown to me. With Google I can have that: full search page customization with applications that are actually relevant to me. It’s like a big shopping center with only shops where I actually buy. No loosing time walking around trying to find something: I choose what to see and it is there all in one place.
  5. Productivity. This last one is a sort of round-up of all the above. If I’m working on something, I don’t want to waste time. If I can have everything I need in one place, fast, efficiently and customizable that is the one I choose. Google is a major productivity booster with efficient time-wasting cuts.

I don’t use Google because it’s Google, because it’s trendy, because it had its own brand verbalized. I use Google because it works. I don’t want alternatives unless they give me the same quality, not even for one single day.

The “A Day Without Google” was not a day for me. What about you? Did you manage to survive a day without google? Even if you did not know about this initiative, would you try it?

AVG 9 first look

Oct 09, 2009 14:02:57 IST

Just recently Microsoft released the first version of its own anti-virus solution free for Windows owners, however that wont stop the momentum of other free anti-virus software publishers!

AVG is perhaps best known as a free anti-virus software for Windows, which runs the same engine as its commercial counterpart and thus provides the same protection against viruses.

The latest version doesn't come with much of a visual refresh from the last version, however, we are assured that the internals have been tweaked for better and faster performance, which is a good thing, since the old UI works well, and with a product such as an anti-virus software performance is a bigger concern.

This is not to say that AVG 9 doesn't bring anything new, superficially nothing might have changed, however, the product does see the addition of a new identity protection feature, which is available as a free service. Seeing how such cases have become much more common these days, this is a welcome addition indeed. The identity theft feature is accessible through a browser tool-bar.

The phishing feature doesn't seem to work very well though. I tested phishing scams from PhishTank on IE7, and nothing, no detections! Even Firefox was able to detect those website as scams.

AVG clams to have improved the performance of the engine (scan times) "by up to 50 percent depending on system configuration" and reduced the memory usage and boot times by up to 10 to 15%. The whole system does seem fast, and the interface is quite responsive. The memory usage on an fresh Windows XP system hovers around 60 MB while inactive and takes an aadditional 20MB while scanning with no detections. Not quite as low as Microsoft Security Essentials (which took 13MB to 30MB).

The new version reduces the number of intrusions you have to suffer, as it can automatically detect and allow applications from its trustedDB. Another step to reduce scan times is in the form of an initial optimization scan, which speeds up further scans by skipping trusted files which haven't been changed.

The older AVG 8.5 managed to get an advanced rating in the popularAV-Comparatives test , with a detection rate of 94% and AVG 9 should fare similarly. However the overall protection it gives against some of the other threats the internet holds today are seriously doubtable considering its poor phishing detection.

Overall, AVG 9 is an improvement over its previous versions, and the scan times have improved. The new Identity protection feature is also an attractive addition considering how common it is becoming now, however the phishing protection, which is a much older feature leaves much to be desired. For users looking for the free version, you'll have to wait, as currently the latest free version is still 8.5.

A 128-bit Windows? No thanks, maybe later

Oct 09, 2009 14:44:32 IST

Despite 64-bit personal computers being available for over five years, and nearly every computer today supporting 64-bit computing, when it comes to software, 32-bit is till hanging on strongly.

The 64-bit hype is now over, the dreams of double performance, and terabytes of memory have now collapsed into the reality we see: that for an average user, there are few applications which can actually take advantage of 64-bit, and few programs currently need to address more than 3GB of memory. Windows 7, coming out at a time when it is hard to find a 32-bit processor in the market, still offers a 32-bit version, although it may be the last in its line.

Every day we see more software ported to 64-bit, but unless they are rewritten taking the new architecture into account, they will likely suffer a degradation in performance, not an improvement.

Now it appears that Windows 8 might be built for both 64-bit and 128-bit computers! But will the world even be ready for 128-bit by the time Windows 8 comes out, probably some three years from now? It is unlikely.

One could find mathematical applications even today which could greatly benefit from even a 256-bit computer, yet as an architecture for Windows, it doesn't make much sense. Even 64-bit processors and operating systems have been available for decades but they were confined to an esoteric audience.

The question then is, will the average Windows user even need applications which require 128-bit processors?

That's 309485009821345068724781056 terabytes of RAM! And numbers as large as 170141183460469231731687303715884105728!

We may find this an unusually large number, but we only need to look back two decades, when a 100MB hard disk would have been a myth! For now, we haven't even saturated the 16 million terrabytes promised by 64-bit architectures, or even the artificial 128GB RAM limit set by 64-bit versions of Windows Vista. The time will surely come, but it is not now.

It is more likely then that is about getting Windows ready for the eventual 128-bit shift, whether it is in the next seven years, or the next 17. As a means of getting ready for the eventual shift, this is a good plan indeed.

Most of the Windows code written today, will someday be a part of Windows 9 or 10, 11, or whichever it takes before we get 128-bit processors in the market. By already beginning to optimize the code for this future eventuality, we can be assured that when the 128-bit generation comes, Windows won't be caught with its pants down!

Create Bootable Live USB Drives

UNetbootin lets you create bootable live and installation USB drives for both Windows and Linux. This way you don't need to carry Live CDs & DVDs anymore

Deepak Kalra

Friday, October 09, 2009

With so many live operating systems available you have plenty of choices for making bootable live USB drives. And to top it all, you have installation CD/DVDs which you want to convert to USBs for either fast installation or for installing to a device which doesn't have an optical drive. Also, with the advent of netbooks the requirement of USB based installation media has grown rapidly. However, the worst problem here is that most ways of creating such USB drives are command line based. So, if you want to make a bootable installation USB disk of the latest OS Windows 7, you need to run some commands to make sure the USB drive is bootable. UNetbootin lets you create a bootable USB drive from any bootable optical media or an ISO. The utility also takes care of the download for Linux distros.

The user interface of UNetbootin has over 40 Linux Live CDs listed along with their multiple versions. All you need to do is to create a ootable USB drive from any such distro is to select the name of the distro and its version from the interface and then select the USB drive you want to write to. The tool does the rest.

You have to select the second radio button on the utility which says Diskimage, and select the ISO from the dropdown list next to the radio button. That's it. We tried building an installation USB drive of Windows 7 and Fedora 11 using this utility and it worked perfectly .

After selecting Live Distro for writing to a USB drive from the drop down list, you have to select the desired version.

Once you select the distro and the version of the OS and hit Ok button, the application will download the distro from the correct location and write it to the USB and make it bootable. From this option, you can browse and select the path of any desired ISO image and use it to make your USB drive bootable. It works with Windows ISOs as well.

Reliance Communications will roll-out the Simply Reliance Plan nationally for both prepaid and postpaid segments on Tuesday, October 6, 2009.

Reliance Communications unveils a bold new plan that will ignite the next revolutionary phase of growth and innovation in the Indian market. The company is rolling out a first of its kind plan called Simply Reliance Plan on its CDMA and GSM networks. Reliance Communications will roll-out the Simply Reliance Plan nationally for both prepaid and postpaid segments on Tuesday, October 6, 2009.

Anil Dhirubhai Ambani, Chairman, Reliance Communications said, "Reliance pioneered the mobile revolution making calls cheaper than a postcard in 2005. In another game changing move today, Reliance brings a billion Indians closer to each other, with one single rate for all local and STD calls, to any mobile or landline network, anytime, anywhere in India, without any conditions or restrictions.Once again, Reliance has set new standards, offering unbelievable and never-before savings to a billion Indians.”

The Simpy Reliance Plan offers one single rate of 50 paise per minute across India covering 24,000 towns and 600,000 villages.

The single rate of 50 paise per minute applies to --
all local calls
all STD calls
to any mobile CDMA or GSM or Landline from anywhere in India
all incoming and outgoing calls while roaming
anytime of the day or night
all SMSes – local or national

To avail this Simply Reliance Plan, existing or new prepaid customers have to purchase one time special tariff voucher for Rs.48 to enjoy lifetime validity.

However, postpaid users too can now avail this Simply Reliance plan and enjoy the same single rate of 50 paise per min with monthly subscription fee of Rs.99.

With the Simply Reliance Plan, Reliance Communications offers seamless and unconditional benefits to all its existing customers, both prepaid and post-paid, as well as new customers waiting in the wings to join the Reliance family.
